What to Expect

This is a quick breakdown of what to expect when you feature at the Ugly Mug:

Before the Reading

Please send a bio and photo to whoever booked you. We’ll send you a link to make sure we’ve posted things correctly. If you have any other promo material, like youtube links or book links, feel free to send those along as well.

The Night of the Reading

The reading start at 8pm (ish). Street parking around the Mug can be hard to find, please be aware of the restrictions in the neighborhoods surrounding the Mug. You can park directly behind the venue, but let Phil (the owner) know you’re back there, especially if you plan to go grab food before the reading.

When you arrive, let the guy behind the counter know you’re the feature.

The reading usually begins with the host reading a poem by somebody else, followed by reading the rules. Then, a few open readers to warm up the crowd.

There will be a Poet Before the Feature to give you a warning that you’re next (and also get people to silence their phones).

When you feature, plan on about 20 minutes for your set.

We will take a shortish break, where we pass a hat (all money goes to the featured readers), and you can sell any merchandise you may have.

After the break, we come back and finish off the open readers, then go home.

We have a youtube channel, and generally video each featured reader. If you’d prefer we don’t record your performance, no problem, just let us know when you arrive or before you start.
